Prestige classes offer a new form of multiclassing. Unlike the basic classes found throughout select handbooks, characters must meet requirements before they can take their first level of a prestige class. Why would anyone take a prestige class? Well the short answer is that a prestige class can offer unique abilities not found within the main character classes found in this gaming system. A prestige class allows one, in a way to customize and specialize a characte making it distinct from others that share the same class. Think of prestige classes as a subset of classes that are complimentary to your character that will enchance your character in a way you wish. There is no limit to the amount of prestige classes one can take as long as you fulfill the requirements. Like any class one needs to gain experience points to raise in levels in any class including a prestige class and the amount need would be the same as if you were leveling your main character. A prestige class does get added to your overall character level. Currently there are over 467 prestige classe available.
